		<description>I was thinking that the deer were remarkably calm until I remembered that it is time for the rut.  That could be why the male is in with the females, assuming elk behave like our red deer.  They may have been preoccupied and annoyed with you rather than calm.  Perhaps good that you were not on foot.</description>
