Hiker Hell: A Blogspot Worth Reading

I got a comment on my recent liquid bandaid post from the author of HikerHell.blogspot.com and went to his site to investigate. His site talks about mishaps and deaths involving hikers and backpackers with the idea of helping others avoid trail tragedies. Says Hiker Hell’s blogger:

“Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive. This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones. “Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

I’ve posted about three such incidents: Aron Ralston (“A Rock and a Hard Place”) cutting off his hand to survive; Amy Racina (“Angels in the Wilderness”) who survived a bone-crushing fall, and Backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson (“The Last Season”), who died in a freak accident. Take care. It is wild and beautiful out there, but also can be dangerous.

Be light. Be safe. Be one with the pack.
